Incredible. One of many great adjectives that could be used to describe the new Nissan GT-R, which, is easily a contender for the most shocking car of 2007. It seems everyone thought the next "Skyline" was going to be much of the same routine from Nissan, AWD, Turbocharged six cylinder. Oh it's that, alright, and yet, so much more. So much, in fact, that Nissan felt it was too amazing to label as another Skyline, instead, it wears only three letters.
The GT-R was unveiled officially about a month ago, however, up until this point, only the big name magazines had access to it. However, the good folks at Edmunds.com got their hands on one, and were more that happy to put it through its paces. The results were far from "business as usual", in fact, they were remarkable. This car is an animal, through and through.
Officially the quickest car Edmunds has ever tested, the GT-R screams to sixty miles per hour in only 3.3 seconds. Brave enough to stay in the throttle? You'll be at the quarter mile marker in only 11.6 seconds. Did we forget to mention this is a V6? Well, it is a twin turbocharged V6, which produces around 475 hp to all four wheels, but the fact of the matter is, this is one of the fastest cars to ever land on showroom floors. This car is phenomenal.
Now, if you are confused as to how Edmunds found an extra .2 seconds in the short times, we have an explanation. It appears that Nissan has been holding back and not showing the world the special Launch Control feature. This feature allows you to nail the throttle, has the computer hold the revs to 4500, and literally launches the car out of the hole when you lift off the brake pedal.
However, the drag strip is not the only place this masterpiece shines. It dominated the Nürburgring, turning lap times comparable to cars that cost three to five times its $70,000 price tag. Huge 15 inch brakes with 6 piston Brembo calipers. While zero to sixty is important, getting back to zero is always more important. The GT-R gets you there in a mere 104 feet. That's two feet better than the Corvette Z06.
Needless to say, this car is a work of art. It will certainly have a profound effect on the car world, and hopefully get other manufacturers' attention. It already has Chevrolet's, who officially announced its new Corvette ZR1 just days ago. The horsepower wars are getting brutal, who will come out on top? Stay tuned to RPM Planets to find out.
