V8 power with V6 fuel efficiency: the seemingly unachievable goal that Ford Motor Company set out to achieve this past year. Well, it's finally here. Ford recently announced at the Detroit Auto Show that the Twin-Force engine featured in the Lincoln MKR concept car will be going into production. The twin turbocharged, direct-injected V6 engine makes 415 horsepower, all while getting V6 fuel economy and having the ability to run on E85 gasoline.
The secret to Ford's amazing economy is the direct injection technology. This system injects the fuel directly into the cylinder, rather than into the cylinder head. This provides a more precise control on how much fuel is delivered. This system is already in use in some Mazda and Ford products.
Ford says it would take a 6.0 liter V8 engine to produce the same amount of power as this V6 achieves. Because of the smaller displacement, the V6 gets 15% better economy than a V8. This shows the potential these car makers have of creating an environmentally friendly sports car that makes amazing power. V6 engines have seen a huge increase in power, performance, and popularity in the past few years, and the Twin Force Engine from Ford will surely only make them more popular.
