A source inside GM has reported that the 2009 Chevrolet Impala will return to a rear wheel drive configuration. Supposedly, it will be based upon the upcoming 2009 Camaro, and will be engineered by Holden's Australia plant, which is also designing the new Camaro.
Even more speculation is that Chevy will upscale the Impala line, much like the mid 90's model. The Impala would be a luxury four-door sedan that would probably compete in the same classes as European sedan models. Chevy is considering the upscale due to the fear that the redesigned Malibu will take away from the sales of the Impala.
The 2009 Impala is set to feature increased cabin space, a longer wheelbase, but an overall similar look to the 2007 model. As far as whether or not the Impala will get fancy, the GM source said the following:
"It is too early to tell," the GM source said. "With Malibu's introduction next year and market analysis and trends and things like that, I think anything I said about that would be speculative."
Stay tuned to Planet Bowtie and RPM Planets for more details on the upcoming Impala and Camaro.
