Photographs of the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette SS in road testing continue to
surface. The latest pictures reveal
subtle changes in the shape of this assumed road-worthy race machine. Starting with the meat and potatoes of what will make this
GM's ultimate performance car, a definite bulge in the hood has been
spotted. Cramming 6.2-liters of American
V-8 with the supercharger is an easy explanation for the need of increased
under hood real estate. Pictures also
reveal that the hood and roof are made out of carbon fiber. Not only does this deviate from the expected
fiberglass history of the Corvette, but the new material will yield additional
weight savings.
With tape covering the major exterior modifications on the
hood and what appear to be side vents, a new lip-type spoiler is clearly
visible. With the purported speeds of
this Chevrolet Corvette, the increased down force will be a welcomed requirement. A new liberal mud flap design finishes off
the aft of the car. Reaching off the
fender, the flaps cover the width of the Michelin tires, which are also new to
the design. Both Goodyear and Michelin
were reported to have bids in for this supercar contract. Though Goodyear has had a long standing
contract with GM's Corvette, these latest shots show that things are looking
good for Michelin.
The wheels themselves are new to the SS. Derived from the current dual 5 spoke Z06
rims, an additional 10 spokes have been implemented. Unfortunately, there are few certainties about
the Corvette SS. Two sureties will be
that this domestic supercar will set a new benchmark of what we know as the
Corvette and RPM Planets will keep you up-to-date on the latest news. |
