The top brass at Ford haven't been wasting time or development efforts with their latest hit, the Ford Edge. Last week, the Ford Edge was launched into production. If you are not familiar with the Edge, it features a unique shape, lots of features and a single power plant / transmission combination that, when combined, look amazing and make a great crossover vehicle. Ford should have a real hit on their hands and if the basic Edge is not enough, RPM has picked up on a hint, from a Ford spokesman at the launch that a high performance version is in the "pipeline". Although, it will not have a V8, nor will it be true RWD, the hopped up Edge could have a turbocharged / direct injected 3.5L V6 (similar to the engines found in the MAZDASPEED vehicles) under the hood. This power plant could push the overall horsepower to 300+. Toss in some form of driver commanded shifting, sporty handling and this crossover will really sell like hotcakes. Stay tuned as we will be waiting for more information about this high powered Edge. |

Now targeting women and minorities, Mercury aims to get drivers who would normally not even consider a blue oval product, into the driver's seat. In the past, Mercury vehicles have been very similar in appearance and build to the Ford counterparts, but now Ford states they will carry an appearance all of their own. Signaling the changes to come in the near future for Ford, a prototype Ford Focus Coupe and Sedan were recently seen wearing the traditional company supplied camouflage. The coupe version seems to be the rebirth of the Ford Escort, which finished its production run in 1997. The coupe seems to be Fords attempt to reach out to a broader market. The prototype test mules showed sharper lines, improved looks, and a sporty new image to the almost ten year old Focus. These are the first captured images of the production spec prototype that has previously been simply a Focus with what appeared to be a Fusion front-end attached. No report of a hatchback model has been found yet, but knowing the success of the current model, one is sure to be circulating out there somewhere. Stay tuned to RPM Planets, as we will keep you updated as more develops. |
