After this past year's success with their diesel powered R10 race car, Audi may be putting a diesel fueled power plant in the upcoming R8 supercar that we recently reported on. A test mule with the body of a Lamborghini Gallardo, which is the base for the new R8, was spotted and sources say they heard the sounds of a diesel motor coming from within.
While Audi has not confirmed the switch, sports car enthusiasts have nothing to fear. The engine would be a twin turbo, 6 liter V12 pushing out over 500 horsepower, and equally, if not more impressive torque figures. Diesels love to make torque, so the switch from gasoline to diesel may be well worth it. The car will be a phenomenal performer, no matter which engine Audi chooses to place behind the cabin, but after seeing the performance in the Le Mans races, its hard to imagine them NOT choosing to go diesel. Its the wave of the future. Stay tuned to RPM Planets for more information on this amazing supercar.
