It is incredible to see just how well Audi continues to do with innovative ideas and designs in their vehicle lineup. Previously, we were able to get a sneak peek at the R8 supercar concept and now it is official. The Audi R8 sports car not only has the name, but it also has the soul of the five-time Le Mans winner. At first glance, the aluminum-framed, 420hp, all-wheel drive coupe seems to capture the very essence of motorsport success and bottle it for production and as one turns the glance into a study, the evidence is overwhelming.
The Exterior: One look at the exterior of the Audi R8 will cue you in to the fact that it is something special. The cabin favors the front of the car, which is necessary to house the mid-mounted V8 engine. The cars lines resemble a toned sprinter--muscular, yet sleek. The car displays an impressive use of new-age technology, utilizing not only LED taillights, but LED headlights will be an option on the 2007 models. The body of the R8 is made completely of aluminum, whose light weight helps the car achieve an 8.16 lb/hp power to weight ratio. The rear of the car receives an automatic retracting rear spoiler, and formula one style rear diffusers. Dual exhaust and 18 inch standard wheels finish off the cars athletic appearance.
The Interior: The interior of the Audi attempts to meld the driver to the frame of the car, and achieves this goal with flying colors. The interior is driver friendly, however, when you sit down, you know this car was built for racing. Interior goodies are left to the essentials, however, if you feel the urge to pack up and leave for the weekend, the 3.5 cubic feet of storage space provides ample space for a suitcase or two.
The Drivetrain: While the interior and exterior are nice, this car truly begins to shine when you open the hood and take a look. The 4.2 liter V8 engine provides 10 horsepower per liter. With a redline of 8250 rpm, the engine truly sings. The broad range of torque makes this car a joy to drive, and will immediately help one realize why the R8 race car did so well. The smooth power allows one to travel from zero to sixty-two in a mere 4.6 seconds. Permanent all wheel drive and a dry sump oiling system are standard features, while the car has two transmission choices. Take the blue pill and go with a six speed manual or go with the red pill and enjoy a sequential shift gearbox.
The Chassis: Gas filled shocks give this car a race inspired feel while maintaining a surprisingly good comfort level. If a driver wants even more comfort, one can spring for the Audi magnetic ride system, which uses sensors to correct damping forces on each corner in any possible driving situations. There are two settings, one aimed for comfort, and one aimed for race. Once again, a race car for the streets.
Equipment and Trim: For those that have trouble parking or backing up, Audi has installed a rear view camera to assist with vision. A Bang & Olufsen sound system provides an auditory experience that rivals the Metropolitan Opera House. A potential buyer can choose from eight different exterior colors, and has the option for upgrading to a 19 inch wheel. The Craftsmanship: This automobile is no mass produced, standard assembly line type of automobile. Every car is hand crafted, with only fifteen cars built per day. Groups of Audi engineers overlook each step of the building process, making sure that these cars leave the factory with the quality that is expected from an Audi flagship.
