Just recently, we reported that a Porsche 911 GT2 was seen driving around with its camoflauge on. Set to debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show this year, we expected to start seeing it out and about, but never expected it to be this breathtaking when it finally arrived.
The Porsche 911 GT2 has always been the cream of the crop, end all, be all option on the 911's order list. It is created with the best parts, makes the most power, and turns the best numbers on the race track. The 997 generation of the GT2 offers no less, and will not disappoint. Featuring 530 hp and a rear wheel drive configuration, the GT2 features what may be the best zero to sixty time to ever leave Stuttgart. But wait, it gets better. The GT2 comes in at an anorexic 3175 pounds, giving it a power to weight ratio of just 6 lbs. per hp and a top speed of 204 mph. Incredible. The light weight even helps the GT2 to achieve almost 19 mpg when you can keep your foot out of the long right pedal, which almost begs you to mat it. Who needs good gas mileage anyway, right?
The extra power over the base model 911 Twin Turbo comes from a pair of larger compressor wheels and housings, as well as Porsche's revolutionary use of an expansion intake manifold, which keeps the air/fuel mix much cooler than a traditional manifold. This gives the GT2 an almost 15% increase in fuel economy at full throttle than the 911 TT. A titanium exhaust system cuts the weight of the stock system in half, and helps to free up some extra power.
One of the most impressive weight losses comes from the brake rotors. 44 lbs were shed by using rotors made of carbon fiber and a ceramic compound. You say, 44 pounds, thats it? But keep in mind, this is unsprung weight. A loss of 44 pounds of unsprung weight makes a huge difference in the way a car handles and performs.
This car is yet another engineering masterpiece from Porsche. The use of new technology and the development of new parts and systems is remarkable. Its feats like the 911 GT2 that ensure that Porsche will remain in the automotive game for many years to come. Stay tuned to Planet Euro and RPM Planets for more information on this amazing machine.
