Jeep continues to expand its lineup into two unique categories: Traditional and Modern. Vehicles with sleek shapes fall into the modern category. Where, the traditional category is reserved for the boxy looking, rugged going Jeeps that we all remember. The Jeep Commander certainly falls into the later of the two.
Even though the boxier looking Jeep offers seating for 7, it weighs in about 500 pounds lighter than its stable mate the Grand Cherokee. That lighter weight transfers into a class leading mid 7 second sprint to 60MPH for the Commander [with the HEMI] verses a mid 8 second sprint for the Grand Cherokee. It also beats out other large motored SUVs like the Trailblazer in the 0-60 catagory. Although the Commander is light on its feet, it still drives like an SUV. It posted a 39MPH speed in the Autoweek Slalom so this vehicle will still require planned lane changes and careful course corrections to avoid any dramatic scenes on the roads. One Jeep trademark that most people are probably aware of is horrible gas mileage. Expect to spend at least $50.00 to even make a dent in the 20.5 gallon tank.
Where this new Jeep shines is execution. The interior is stunning, not to mention comfortable and quiet on long trips. Offering a whole lot of features starting at $ $29,130. You get 7.5 cubic feet of cargo space, stadium style seating, fold flat headrests and all of the other power features that come standard on most vehicles these days. Other options include NAV, rear air conditioning, a back up camera and many more. There should also be a diesel option coming within a year. The outside isnt unique, but you can always tell that its a Jeep. For a more in depth review you can read the Autoweek article. |
