Team Mopar Charger

The task of shaping the new Dodge Charger into a car suitable for Samuel Hubinette to skid through the Formula D Drift competition in 2006 has been achieved. Team Mopar has provided the Dodge Charger with a strengthened chassis, creating founding footprints utilizing the SRT8 platform.

Several SRT preliminary modifications have been incorporated into this project:
  • modified 392 Hemi crate engine
  • new Mopar Engine Management System and Engine Wiring Harness
  • tuned-for-drifting Mopar KW Coilover Suspension Kit
  • Mopar Cold Air Intake
  • Mopar Gauges
  • Mopar Anti-Sway Bar

"This wasn't a typical project," said Eric Vickerman, the SRT (DaimlerChrysler's Street and Racing Technology division) engineer responsible for leading the Mopar Dodge Charger drift project. "We had a lot of challenges. This is the first-ever attempt at a racecar based on the SRT8 Charger platform. We are really breaking new ground, and under a tight deadline. It's hard work, but everyone who worked on the project at SRT enjoyed the challenge."

One of the largest hurdles when utilizing a larger platform, of course, is weight reduction. Starting out at 4100 lbs, the Charger is not a petite unit to begin with. All body panels were replaced with carbon fiber paneling and all glass was swapped out with polycarbonate to assist in the weight loss program.

One of the other challenges to face was the fact that Hubinette was racing in seasons past in the Viper platform; a complete turnabout from the SRT8 foundation. "They're not similar at all. Everything is different," Vickerman said. "The weight, the length, the engine, the starting platform, everything is different. We really had to start from scratch. It was not easy. We didn't have a lot of reference for what we were doing. That was probably one of the greatest obstacles."

The second phase is currently in progress, with Shaun Carlson (of NuForm Racing) at the helm, finishing up the final touches for Hubinette to make the debut run on April 2, 2006 in Long Beach, California.
